Private tutor in Spartanburg, SC

Education

College Student at Spartanburg Community College. Graduated Mills E. Godwin High School with a GPA over 4.

Experience

Tutored freshmen and sophomores in high school for varying levels of Spanish. Before I took Spanish 4 in my junior year of high school, I received a 600 on the SAT Spanish subject test. On the AP exam, I received a 4. I want to be a tutor because Spanish grammar is an area in which I excel and find very easy to explain to others. In high school, I took 4 years of Spanish, including honors Spanish (Spanish 4) and AP Spanish (Spanish 5). I have traveled to Honduras twice in the last three years, for a total time of 4 weeks. I have also tutored Spanish students for English assignments, and have studied with Spanish-speakers who want to improve their English and their accent.

Hobbies

I'm a freshman college student with a love for Spanish. I could not fit Spanish into my schedule, so I am looking for a way to incorporate it into my life so I will not lose what I have learned. I am passionate about learning - some of my interests include calculus and English. However, I also love the outdoors and exercise. An interesting fact: I took my first real Spanish course in middle school for two years, and I hated it! If you or someone you know hates Spanish, I have been where they are. I understand the confusion and disinterest. It can be solved more simply that you can imagine. For this reason, I love tutoring in Spanish because it is a simple language, but students just get confused when the teachers teach the basics. Whenever I meet a new student that needs tutoring in Spanish, I always ask them if they know what "conjugation" is (manipulation of verbs to fit the subject). If the student says yes, great! If they say "no", then I know I can lay down a solid foundation that will make their Spanish-learning experience far less complicated. Most students that I have come across simply do not know what is going on in their Spanish class, or what all of the strange new words mean, or why it seems like one word is being said many times over and over with slight variations. For low-level Spanish students (Spanish 1 and 2), I always make sure to lay down the foundation of Spanish first: learn what: "conjugation" is and memorize the six part pattern, and also learn and memorize vocabulary. Usually, I will first explain what "conjugation" is in English - the English language is like Spanish in the sense that both languages conjugate verbs. After the student understands in English, I show him or her the Spanish version, and comprehension is much easier. For vocabulary, I help students remember certain words and their functions in sentences by creating mnemonics (small and funny phrases) for each word so that the vocabulary will stick in their brain for quizzes, tests, and beyond. By the end of my time with each student, my goal is not only to have helped them understand what he or she went over in class, but to inspire a love for Spanish and an understanding of its beauty and simplicity. I can also study with Spanish speakers that speak a moderate amount of English who want to learn English better and/or improve their English accent. I am in college right now to become a Speech Language Pathologist with a focus in accent and dialect reduction. Helping Spanish speakers improve their English is enjoyable for me and my students in the past have benefitted greatly. Please contact me if this applies to you. A side note: I am best at tutoring in Spanish, but I do have a litter experience in tutoring in other subjects as well, such as writing for lower high school levels, and elementary math. I also have experience in Latin 1, and I feel comfortable preparing students for the AP Spanish Exam. Please inquire about any subject. Please contact me any time by cell phone: (804) 687-7643. If I do not answer, please leave a message and I will get back to you quickly.
